Pepper Bread Bowl Dip

Not long ago I used to be able to leave the house and go watch football every Sunday.  The day would be filled with bragging about my fantasy football skills and eating tons of awesome food.  The Pepper Bread Bowl was developed over those days while more recently being used for things like kids birthday parties and baby showers.

Although not very good for you, it does use hot and sweet peppers from our garden along with our homemade bread.  I think that makes up for the tons of cheese and mayo, right?

To start making this great party food you will need a bread bowl.  I supposed you could make this in a pan, but then you would deprive yourself of being able to rip apart the bread bowl chunks and eat them when the dip runs out.  I make one of our homemade bread loafs to use for bread bowl.  You can click the link to get that recipe or just purchase a round crusty loaf to use.

Slice off the top and scoop out the inside bread to make bowl. You should slice the extra bread pieces and top into cubes and bake along with bowl to use as an extra vehicle for dip consumption.

Now into a large bowl mix 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cup mayo, 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 cup diced sweet peppers (we used frozen peppers from the garden), and 1/4 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes.   If I was making this for friends I would double the red pepper but as kids will be enjoying this I only use 1/4 teaspoon for a little hint of a kick.

Next step is to load the deliciousness into the bread bowl.

Once loaded it goes on a sheet pan and gets covered with tin foil.  I bake it covered for 30 minutes at 375 degrees.  Then uncover and bake another 10-15 minutes.

Now you ready the toasted bread and crackers for the awesomeness to come.  Regular chips won’t be strong enough for this dip, it is really thick and cheesy.

On a side note I have tried subbing greek yogurt for the mayo and sour cream.  It was still good but nowhere near as great as with the mayo and sour cream.  If I am going to waste calories eating all this cheese and crackers then for me it is best tasting really great!
